A window problem is not always a whole-window problem. A unit may operate poorly while the frame remains sound. A frame or casing may be damaged while the glass and sash still work. Drafts can come from perimeter sealing, and torn screens or damaged shutters have their own focused service paths.
This hub starts with the component that is actually failing, then routes to material or project-specific pages when a full window project is needed.

Whole-Window Projects vs Component Repairs
The window category becomes much easier to navigate when the user separates the operating unit from the pieces around it. A torn screen, deteriorated casing or draft at the perimeter can often remain a focused project. Problems with the entire unit, opening or repeated operation may justify a broader replacement discussion.
Material matters only after the project type is understood. A screen-only problem stays a screen repair even if the window itself is vinyl, while localized deterioration around a wood window may call for frame repair rather than immediate full replacement.
What to Have Ready
- Which room/opening is affected.
- Whether the window opens, closes and locks normally.
- Visible damage to frame, trim, screen or shutter.
- Draft or water-entry location.
- Current material if known.
- Whether the goal is repair, replacement or a new/rebuilt opening.
New-construction windows deserve extra care because the rough opening and wall integration are part of the installation. That is a different scope from sliding a replacement unit into an existing opening.
Start With What Is Failing
Window Material & Project Types
When the whole unit is being installed or replaced, the material and opening type become more important. Vinyl and wood windows have separate pages. A new-construction window in a new or substantially rebuilt opening is different from replacing a window in an existing opening.
Repair vs Full Window Work
A broken screen, damaged casing or worn weatherstripping should not automatically become a window replacement. The reverse is also true: repeated operational failure, broad frame deterioration or an opening that no longer performs as needed may make component-by-component repair less useful.
Window Questions
Is the problem the glass, frame or trim?
That distinction determines which page fits best.
Can drafts be handled without replacing the window?
Sometimes. Weatherproofing is a separate service when the window remains usable and the issue is perimeter sealing or weatherstripping.
When is a new-construction window page appropriate?
When the opening itself is new or substantially rebuilt and rough-opening integration is central to the project.
