Wall and ceiling projects should be routed by the stage of the surface. A hole or water stain starts with repair. A new partition starts with framing and drywall. Fresh drywall needs finishing before paint. Wallpaper and caulk sit on top of surfaces that should already be sound.

Start With the Surface Condition
From Underlying Repair to a Finished Surface
Paint, wallpaper and caulk are finish layers. They should not be used to hide active leaks, movement, damaged drywall or deteriorated exterior material. Installation puts new board on prepared framing/substrate. Finishing treats joints, corners and fasteners so the board can receive paint or texture. New board installation, joint finishing and localized repairs involve different preparation and should be identified separately when planning the work.
Interior vs Exterior Painting
Exterior surfaces face weather exposure and material deterioration. Interior painting is more about room logistics, walls, ceilings, trim and surface preparation.
- Identify damage/cause.
- Repair structure/substrate.
- Install board or finish surface as needed.
- Prepare for final coating/wallpaper.
- Apply finish.
- Handle touch-ups and transitions after underlying work is complete.
Painting & Drywall Questions
Can paint fix a crack?
It can cover color, not the underlying cause.
Does drywall installation include painting?
Not automatically.
The intended final look also changes the preparation. Smooth paint can reveal defects that a heavier texture does not. Dark or higher-sheen colors can make surface irregularities more visible. Those are finish-planning considerations, not excuses to skip substrate work.
- Active damage source resolved.
- Wall/ceiling material sound.
- Needed drywall repair complete.
- Joints/corners finished.
- Old coating/wallpaper condition known.
- Final paint/texture/wallpaper goal chosen.
- Adjacent trim/flooring protected or coordinated.
