Drywall Finishing in Champaign, IL

On this page

Drywall finishing begins after the panels are installed and secured. The job is to turn visible joints, fasteners and corner details into a surface that is ready for the planned paint or texture.

Joints, Tape & Fasteners

  • Board joints.
  • Tape.
  • Fastener areas.
  • Inside corners.
  • Outside corner bead.
  • Patch transitions.
  • Existing texture edges.

Preparing Flat Surfaces and Corners for the Intended Finish

A wall intended for smooth paint can reveal more surface irregularity than one receiving heavier texture. The finish goal should be known before the final sanding/texture stage. Corner details need their own treatment so edges remain straight and durable.

Existing Texture & Patch Transitions

Matching an old texture can be more difficult than finishing a new room from scratch. A larger blend area may be needed to reduce the visual transition.

  1. Panels/repair secured.
  2. Joints and fasteners treated.
  3. Corners finished.
  4. Surface built in coats as needed.
  5. Texture applied or surface smoothed.
  6. Final prep for primer/paint.

Finishing vs Repair or Installation

If board is missing, use Drywall Installation. If the existing wall is damaged, use Drywall & Wall Repair. Finishing is the stage between solid board and final paint.

Drywall Finishing Questions

Does finishing include painting?

Not automatically.

Can an old texture be matched exactly?

Exact matching is not guaranteed.

Dust control and sequencing also matter before painting. Finishing should be complete and the surface cleaned before primer is used to reveal any remaining defects.

  • Joint edges feathered.
  • Fastener areas covered.
  • Corners straight.
  • Texture transition acceptable.
  • Surface cleaned before primer.
  • Final lighting conditions considered.
  • Paint stage begins only after finishing is complete.

The final sanding and surface check should consider where trim, cabinets or tile will meet the drywall. A wall that will receive a backsplash has different visible finish priorities from an open painted wall, even though the substrate still needs to be sound and flat enough for the next material.
