A raised interior threshold can come from the threshold piece itself or from a height difference between the floors on each side. Lowering it successfully means understanding which part creates the barrier.
Identify the Transition
- Threshold material.
- Height above each floor.
- Flooring material on both sides.
- Door swing and bottom clearance.
- Trim/jamb condition.
- Fully interior vs exterior-adjacent location.
- Desired smoother transition.
- Lower, Remove or Replace?
A removable wood or metal threshold can be different from a transition created by two finished floor heights. Removing the piece may expose unfinished edges that still need a transition.
Door Clearance
Changing the threshold can affect the gap below the door. The door may need adjustment, but major door work should remain on the Door service.
Exterior-Adjacent Boundaries
Threshold Questions
Can every threshold be made completely flush?
Not necessarily.
Does lowering guarantee accessibility compliance?
No.
The door should also be checked in its closed position. Lowering a threshold may increase the gap below the slab, which can be acceptable in some interior locations but undesirable in others.
- Barrier source identified.
- Threshold removed/modified only if appropriate.
- Floor edges protected.
- Height difference addressed.
- Door bottom clearance checked.
- Trim/jamb condition finished.
- No exterior weather seal accidentally removed.
- Broader flooring work routed out.
Where carpet meets hard flooring, the transition may also secure the carpet edge. Removing the old threshold without planning the flooring edge can create a loose or unfinished boundary even if the height is reduced.
If the threshold also helps hold a transition strip or floor edge, the replacement solution needs to preserve that function while reducing the barrier.
The finished transition should also remain easy to maintain. A new low-profile strip should not create exposed sharp edges or a loose flooring boundary after ordinary use.
A one-word "lower" goal should be translated into the actual desired transition so the solution can be evaluated against the floors and door rather than an arbitrary target.
