A garbage disposal sits at the intersection of the sink, drain and electrical supply. A leak, noise or failure can come from the disposal itself or from the connections around it.
Start With the Symptom or Replacement Goal
- Unit will not run.
- Unusual noise.
- Leak at sink flange.
- Leak at drain connection.
- Loose mounting.
- New unit replacing existing disposal.
- New disposal where none existed.
Disposal Fit and Existing Power Conditions
The new unit must fit the sink opening/mounting system and leave room for drain and dishwasher connections where applicable. Normal product connection can be scoped only where an existing suitable power/control setup exists. Electrical modification is separate.
Repair vs Replacement
Disposal Questions
Can a disposal be installed under any sink?
Fit and drain/cabinet conditions matter.
Does this page include electrical circuit work?
No.
A leak should also be located carefully. Water from the faucet or sink rim can travel down the cabinet and look like a disposal leak. The project should identify whether the water begins at the flange, body, drain connection or another fixture.
- Sink/flange condition.
- Available under-sink space.
- Drain alignment.
- Dishwasher connection where present.
- Existing power/switch.
- New unit dimensions.
- Leak source identified.
- Broader sink/electrical problem routed separately.
If the disposal is connected to a dishwasher, that connection should remain properly routed and accessible after replacement. A change in disposal body position can make an existing hose path awkward even when the sink flange fits.
The cabinet floor should also be checked for old water damage. Replacing the disposal does not repair swollen cabinet material left by a previous leak.
A replacement should also be checked after the cabinet is returned to normal use: hoses and drain parts should not be pushed into the disposal body by stored items, and the power/control arrangement should remain accessible.
Use the site chat with the disposal model if known, current symptom and existing sink/power condition.
