Hardscape Installation & Repair in Champaign, IL

On this page

Hardscape includes paver and masonry surfaces that are assembled from units rather than poured as one concrete slab. When these surfaces settle or become uneven, the visible pavers may still be reusable while the base below needs correction.

Identify the Material & Feature

  • Paver patio.
  • Paver walkway.
  • Masonry path or small surface.
  • Edging/border system.
  • Existing settled unit surface.

Base Conditions, Drainage and Surface Transitions

The units depend on the base below them. Poor drainage or settlement can create repeated low spots even after individual pavers are reset. Edges keep the surface contained. Door thresholds, concrete walks and lawn borders create transitions that should be planned before installation.

Reusing Existing Units

Existing pavers can sometimes be reused, but breakage and discontinued styles can limit matching.

Hardscape Questions

Is hardscape the same as poured concrete?

No.

Can settled pavers just be topped up from above?

The underlying base condition should be addressed.

For repairs, resetting one settled area works best when the base problem is truly local. If several sections keep sinking or spreading apart, a broader base rebuild can be more practical than repeating small adjustments.

  • Material and unit size.
  • New vs existing surface.
  • Base condition.
  • Drainage direction.
  • Edge restraint condition.
  • Transition to steps/concrete/lawn.
  • Reusable units identified.
  • Settlement pattern mapped.

Hardscape repairs should also look at edge restraint. A paver area can continue spreading after the surface is reset if the edge that holds the field in place has failed.

Material reuse is practical only when the units remain sound. Broken or heavily stained pieces may need replacement even if the base is rebuilt, and exact color matching with older pavers may not be possible.
