Accent Lighting Installation & Upgrades in Champaign, IL

On this page

Accent lighting is meant to do something specific: highlight a surface, make a task area easier to use or add controlled light to a shelf, cabinet or architectural feature. The design goal should be defined before the fixture type is chosen.

What Should the Lighting Highlight?

  • Under-cabinet task light.
  • Shelf/display lighting.
  • Cove or architectural accent.
  • Artwork or feature lighting.
  • Small task-zone lighting.

Fixture Visibility, Placement and Power Requirements

Some systems are intended to disappear into a recess or under a cabinet. Others are designed to be visible. Placement changes both glare and the quality of the light on the target surface. Plug-in and some low-voltage systems can stay at product level. A new hardwired location, circuit or concealed wiring path can require qualified electrical work.

Dimmers, Sensors & Smart Controls

  • Simple on/off.
  • Dimmer.
  • Timer.
  • Motion/occupancy control.
  • Smart/app control where product compatibility supports it.

Accent vs General Room or Outdoor Lighting

If the goal is to light the whole room, use Light Fixture Installation. If the project is exterior, use Outdoor Lighting. Accent lighting should remain focused on a feature or task area.

Accent Lighting Questions

Can LED strips be hidden inside cabinets?

Placement depends on the product, cabinet design and power route.

Does this include adding new circuits?

Not as ordinary accent-light installation.

Placement Should Be Tested Against the Surface Being Lit

Under-cabinet lighting can create dark gaps when fixtures are spaced poorly. Shelf lighting can produce glare when the source is visible from normal eye level. Cove lighting works differently because the goal is often reflected rather than direct light. The mounting position should therefore be chosen from the result the customer wants to see.

Color temperature and brightness controls can also affect how the space feels, but those are product-selection decisions rather than promises of one "best" setting. A kitchen task area and a decorative display may need very different output.

  • What surface is being illuminated.
  • Direct vs reflected light.
  • Fixture visibility from normal viewing position.
  • Existing power route.
  • Need for dimming or automation.
  • Heat/clearance guidance from product.
  • Whether general room lighting should remain a separate layer.
