Blinds and shades fit the window opening in different ways. Inside-mount products depend on the opening dimensions and available depth, while outside-mount treatments depend more on wall or trim surfaces around the opening.
Identify the Treatment & Mounting Style
- Inside-mount blind/shade.
- Outside-mount blind/shade.
- Roller or cellular shade.
- Vertical treatment.
- Manual product.
- Motorized product.
Brackets, Alignment and Consistency Across Windows
The bracket locations must be suitable for the supplied hardware. Drywall, wood trim and masonry conditions are different mounting contexts. A headrail that is not level can affect how the treatment hangs or moves. Handles, locks and trim can interfere with operation if clearance is not considered. Repeated installations should use a consistent visual reference while still respecting variations in individual openings. A shade may fit the opening but still interfere with a window handle, faucet, desk or other nearby object when fully lowered. The operating path should be checked before brackets are finalized.
For repeated windows, small differences in opening width can mean each treatment needs its own bracket position. The finished row should look consistent without pretending the underlying openings are identical.
- Treatment clears window hardware.
- Full drop/open position is usable.
- Cord/chain controls remain accessible where applicable.
- Nearby furniture does not block operation.
- Repeated units align visually.
- Motorized products remain within normal product-level setup.
If the room uses several different treatment types, alignment still matters at the top line. A shade and a blind do not have to look identical, but inconsistent mounting height can make the wall feel unplanned. If the treatment is being installed above a sink, tub, desk or built-in furniture, ladder and bracket access may be more constrained than the window dimensions suggest. Those room conditions should be part of planning the installation.

Motorized Treatments
Normal battery/plug-in product setup can be handled at the product level. New electrical work is separate.
