Sofas and sectionals can arrive in surprisingly large sections. The biggest issue is often not the number of fasteners but getting every module into the final room and arranging the sections in the intended orientation.
Check Doorways & Room Layout First
- Largest module size.
- Door and stair clearances.
- Left/right sectional orientation.
- Final seating layout.
- Clearance for recline or sleeper features.
Sofa Modules, Moving Features and Final Orientation
A standard sofa may need only legs, arms or back sections attached. A modular sectional adds connectors and room-layout decisions between multiple pieces. Normal manufacturer connections can be part of setup, but failed motors, reclining mechanisms or upholstery damage are repair work. Modules should connect in the intended order so the finished orientation matches the room. A sectional may use left-arm and right-arm modules that look similar while boxed. If the room layout is not confirmed first, the assembled seating can end up facing the wrong direction or placing the chaise against a doorway.
Sleeper sections and powered recliners add another layer. Their moving parts need floor and wall clearance beyond the static sofa footprint, and normal manufacturer connectors should remain accessible after the modules are joined.
- Left/right orientation confirmed.
- All modules reach final room.
- Connectors engage without forcing.
- Recline/sleeper motion has clearance.
- Power leads are not pinched.
- Walk paths remain usable.
If the sectional includes hidden storage or a sleeper mechanism, the room needs clearance for that function as well as ordinary seating. Final module placement should be checked in the open/use position before the connectors are treated as permanent. If the product includes loose back cushions or removable decorative pieces, those should be added after the frame modules are connected and the final orientation is confirmed. They should not hide connector access too early.
